The EU could “act quickly and firmly” against what it calls “unwarranted” visa bans issued by the United States on five Europeans involved in fighting online hate and misinformation, an EU official has said.

European Leaders Condemn US Action as ‘Coercion’

European leaders such as Emmanuel Macron accused the US administration of “bullying and threats”, after the visa restrictions targeted individuals who have been central to campaigns to enact laws regulating US-based technology firms.

“For too long, European activists have led coordinated campaigns to coerce US companies to suppress American viewpoints they disagree with,” wrote the US secretary of state online. “This government will not stand for such actions of censorship beyond its borders.”

Broad Criticism Across Europe

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials joined the French president in condemning the move.

The bans were enacted this week on an ex-European commissioner involved in crafting the bloc’s Digital Services Act (DSA), along with several anti-disinformation campaigners, from two in Germany and two in the UK.
