Pat Cummins Set to Play a Significant Contribution in Iconic Rivalry

Test match action

Pat Cummins has taken 309 wickets in 71 appearances with an stellar bowling average.

The Australian selection chief Bailey has stated that captain Pat Cummins will be a central figure in the forthcoming Ashes series.

There were concerns that Cummins might be unavailable due to a stress fracture in his back that remained unresolved.

Previous updates from the Australian camp suggested no definitive call had been made regarding his involvement, with the five-Test series kicking off on November 21 in the WACA.

He revealed that his recovery is on track and remained hopeful about his chances of being involved.

"It's clear that the window is narrowing and there are permutations at play, not just the back issue, but other factors as well," the selector added.

"We're encouraged. There's strong faith that he'll participate in a significant role. With luck it's the first Test. Otherwise, we'll adjust."

Injury History

Cummins was ruled out the white-ball matches against New Zealand and India last month after scans revealed a lower back issue.

He has a history of spinal problems, with flare-ups in 2012-13, 2013-14 and 2015-16 leading to absences from multiple domestic campaigns in a short span.

The bowler mentioned he would be ""aggressive" and "take risks" in his recovery plan to make the squad for the Ashes.

He mentioned that it was unclear if he had started his bowling workouts as part of his rehabilitation but acknowledged it was "pressing" for him to recover fully for the initial match.

Backup Options

Should Cummins not be fit, former captain Steve Smith will lead the side.

The talented all-rounder was recently pulled out from Australia's squad for their limited-overs matches against the subcontinent side as a preventive step because of an abdominal issue.

The selector characterized it as a "small issue and stated that he's scheduled to appear in the state-level matches, so will be "well-prepared to deliver overs."

"Extensive planning has gone into developing the strategy for him to participate for the first Test as an dual-role player," the selector detailed.

"His involvement was limited to the starting games in any case. His aggressive style the bat in limited-overs, if it causes any delay for a short period, we opted to adopt a safer strategy."
