WHO Sounds Alert Over Acute Lack of Weight-Loss Injections
Less than one in 10 patients that would benefit from GLP-1 drugs like Wegovy are able to get them, states the World Health Organization as it issues its initial guidance on the drugs.
Given more than one billion individuals worldwide now classified as obese, it is urging more widespread and fairer availability to this class of drugs.
Based on estimates, in excess of 2,000,000,000 will be obese by 2030 if no action is taken.
"The new guidelines affirms that obesity is a chronic disease that can be addressed with holistic and continuous treatment," stated WHO director-general Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus.
Significant expense, insufficient output, and logistical bottlenecks are significant barriers to broad availability to the treatments that can assist patients in reducing substantial weight, explains the agency.

Even under the current most favorable case, the production of these medications would only suffice for about 100 million people – under 10% of eligible patients, according to the health organization.
The recommendation urges governments and firms to widen availability, through approaches including voluntary licensing.
The intellectual property rights on the active ingredient – the primary component of the drug Wegovy – is scheduled to end in multiple countries in 2026.

GLP-1 drugs imitate a biological compound to delay gastric emptying, suppress the appetite and boost the sense of being full so users consume fewer calories.
Patients typically begin shedding pounds after several weeks of starting on the regular doses.
Evidence suggests users may put most of the weight back on after a year of stopping the treatment, when their normal appetite come back.
